2023 Audi Q5 vs. 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is sophisticatedly designed with high-quality materials. However, it cannot compare against the 2023 Audi Q5, which has better safety features, more powerful engine performance, and a high-class design.

Design & Style

Even on the lowest Premium model, the Q5 delivers plenty of luxury features and enough space for four adults to feel comfortable. At high speeds, the cabin is quiet and peaceful. More opulent options are available across the three trim levels (Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige), including Audi’s stylish Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster. The Q5’s rear seatbacks have superior versatility compared to other car models and can fold in a 40/20/40 configuration.

The interior of the GLC-Class has tastefully selected high-end materials, a contemporary design, intriguingly curved air vents on the dashboard, and substantially digitalized infotainment and HVAC system control. Adjustable lumbar support and heated front seats with memory settings are also included for all models. Standard features include a power liftgate for the backdoor, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting.

Technology & Safety

Driver-assistance features including adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, and forward-collision warning are included as standard equipment for the Q5. On the more expensive models, more assists are available. Even the cheapest Q5 allows buyers to enjoy the user-friendly infotainment system that is displayed on a 10.1-inch dashtop screen. The base Q5 comes equipped with the majority of the expected infotainment features, including Apple Carplay, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Android Auto. Upgrading to the Premium Plus or Prestige trims offers a 12.3-inch display that provides a wide view of the navigation map in addition to selected phone controls, media, a trip computer, or a combination of these.

Only the most basic-driver assistance systems, like blind-spot monitoring and automated emergency braking, will come as standard in the GLC-Class. Choosing the Driver Assistance package will add more sophisticated technology. The most recent Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system is standard on the GLC. Important speed and mechanical information are relayed on a 12.3-inch digital gauge panel, and an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen is slightly angled toward the driver. The system also recognizes voice commands and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The HVAC system and music volume are both controlled by touch screens instead of physical buttons, which is a step backward in user-friendliness.

Performance

The Q5 45 model boasts 261 horsepower that can charge to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. The plug-in hybrid variant adds an electric motor, and the output is increased to 362 horsepower, shortening the run to 60 mph to just 4.5 seconds. The GLC-Class is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which generates 258 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

The GLC-Class is artfully designed and built with high-quality materials, but it loses to the Q5 significantly in terms of safety features and engine performance, which makes the latter the winner.
